Are Portable Printers a Necessity?

Most people today live in the fast lane that they take their work wherever they go. This is evident by various companies making products you can take wherever you go. Tools we need for work, such as computers or phones, are getting smaller and are easier to carry around. The number of products that is going this way is steadily increasing. Music players are now pocket-sized so you can take them wherever you go. Printers, which used to be sitting at desks, are now becoming portable printers so you can continue your work even when you’re traveling.

Before you jump on the wagon of buying portable printers, you need to ask yourself first if you really need them. Some people buy these new technologies because they are fascinated by the fact that you can take printers anywhere. These products cost a little more than ordinary printers so you may want to give it a second thought. Portable printers offer you the benefits of taking a printer with you wherever you go. If you stay at home most of the time, then it is more practical for you to buy a desktop printer instead of a portable printer.

Laptops are Necessary
If you plan to buy a portable printer, it is only logical for you to have a laptop. Laptops are portable computers, which are also needed to use the printer. It will make no sense if you are bringing a printer without any way of using it. There are however new portable printer models that cater to PC-less printing. Some of these units are equipped with wireless interface that allow you to print directly from your PDAs or cellular phones. There are also units, which only have USB ports that can interface with PictBridge-enabled cameras. These printers however are dedicated to printing photos and not Letter size documents.

Profession Matters
Part of the reason why you will need a portable printer is because of your profession. There are professions that require you to travel most of the time that looking for a printer in every locale will be time consuming. Some of these professions are salesmen, photographers and businessmen. In these professions, they are required to produce reports or photos while on the road. This is partly the reason why aside from having a battery, some printers come with a car adapter accessory that allows you to charge or use the printer even while you’re in your car.

For portable printers to be a necessity, you will need a laptop and a profession that requires you to travel a lot. That basically dictates whether you need a portable printer or not. However, there are instances when these two don’t really matter. There are times when you just want to buy a portable printer so that it will be easier for you to print reports or share photos whenever the opportunity arrives. These opportunities may not always be often but the convenience of having that capability within your disposal is something that only you can put a price tag on.
